REMINDER: Dangers for people associated with emollients

Written by admin on Friday 28th May 2021

The Hampshire Medicines Safety Group would like us all to raise awareness again of the fire risk potential of emollients in our conversations with patients

There is an ongoing issue about the fire risks associated with the regular use of emollients by those people who smoke and/or use oxygen treatment in their homes.

Actions being taken locally:

  • CCGs are reviewing patient records in practices to identify patients at risk. The practices are then being asked to telephone the relevant patients, explaining the risks and following up with a posted leaflet.
  • Community pharmacies are being reminded again (last time was back in October 2020) to have relevant conversations with patients when handing out emollient products.

Action requested:

Please revisit and share the previously published CPSC news article with your pharmacy team. It contains a useful Fire Safety Advice leaflet as well as further information concerning the fire hazards and risk of death.
