Smoking Referral service in Southampton
Written by admin on Tuesday 17th October 2017
A new service opportunity for selected community pharmacy locations across Southampton to provide a remunerated smoking referral service to the new service provider 'Southampton Healthy Living'

Southampton Healthy Living (SHL) launches its Community Pharmacy Smoking Referral service on 1st October 2017. The service enables identified community pharmacies within Southampton, to positively refer suitable clients intent on quitting smoking, to the new Healthy Living hubs across the city.Successful referrals will trigger varying remuneration rates to the pharmacy dependent on client eligibility and quit rate performance. The service aims are to improve access to the NHS Stop Smoking Service for clients, focussing particularly on those with long term conditions, pregnant smokers & their partners and other service users by encouraging positive referrals from the large footfall of people who routinely visit community pharmacies. By working collaboratively with community pharmacies it is hoped to reduce the incidence of smoking related illnesses across the city (see attached comms) Attached is the SLA for the initial 15 pilot sites selected on on the basis of geographic, demographic and previous smoking cessation service levels generated at each location. Selected sites have received a direct invitation to provide the service from SHL via CPSC and are asked to return necessary signed agreements ASAP
Our aim is to enable greater transparency to the LPC's decision making process with respect to service commissioning. Our intention is therefore to publish this 'Service Checklist’ to our pharmacy contractors each time we review a new or recommissioned service.
Please read the LPC recommendations, as you have been selected as an authorised location for the commissioning of this service from your pharmacy.
We do hope that you will want to participate in this new referral service, which we think will be of benefit to smokers contemplating giving up, as well as remunerating your pharmacy for referring them onto the local hubs providing the new quit service.
Also attached is the SLA from Southampton Healthy Living, which I would appreciate it if you could sign and return to them, along with your BACS details on headed paper ASAP as the service will go-live on 1st October 2017 in line with the ‘Stoptober’ campaign.

Dear All,
Please find attached our feedback with regard to the forthcoming proposed Smoking Referral service across the Southampton CCG localities.
I have attached the feedback in what is now our standard format ‘Service Checklist'
The Service checklist reflects the key questions that were asked and assessed by the LPC Service sub-committee with regard to the proposed service.
Each question has been RAG graded with appropriate comments which then determined the overall RAG rating for the service.
The LPC ratings are as follows:
Green - fully recommend and suggest participation by all pharmacies.
Amber - recommend but be aware that there are some reservations.
Pharmacies will need to assess their willingness to participate individually.
Red - not recommended and suggest pharmacies do not participate.
The checklist front page contains:
- overall LPC service rating.
- recommendations that the LPC asked to be considered for revision prior to commissioning.
- Commissioners response to the recommendations.
I hope the above explanation is clear, but should you need further explanation, please do contact me using the contact details shown below.
Action required:
- Please return signed contract to:- Southampton Healthy Living at southamptonhealthyliving@scagroup.co.uk or post to SCA Group, Amplevine House, Dukes Road, SO14 0ST
- Please also return your BACS details on headed paper in order for prompt payment to be made to the pharmacy
