PenCycle - Recycling of Novo Nordisk Used Pre-filled Pens

Available to all community pharmacies to sign up to
Novo Nordisk have introduced a recycling service for their used prefilled pens. The pens are made from high quality, long lasting materials that are too good to waste. By recycling them Novo Nordisk can give these materials new purpose.
This service is only available for empty Novo Nordisk diabetes (insulin and GLP-1) and weight management pens. The patient must remove the needle before placing the pen for recycling.
PenCycle boxes hold a maximum of 12 pens – patients should not try and fit more in.
How to get involved in PenCycle
PenCycle is free of charge to the patient and to the pharmacy.
On signing up you will receive a welcome pack containing:
- 25 patient information leaflets
- A poster
- 64 stickers
- A self-adhesive envelope to attached waste collection barcode
- PenCycle patient return boxes
- A blue PenCycle recycling bin (similar to the DOOP bins)

How it works?

Step 1: Provide Novo pen users with a patient returns box and/ or leaflet so they can get started.
Step 2: Accept back full patient returns boxes and place in PenCycle recycling bin and provide a new returns box.
Step 3: Once recycling bin is full arrange a collection with Alliance Healthcare via your existing Alliance account. A barcode will be provided which must be printed off and place in the self adhesive envelop so it is visible. Attached the envelop to the sealed bin.
Step 4: Alliance will collect during an existing delivery slot.

Retain a copy of the waste transfer note (generated during the sign up process) for 2 years.
