A new Community Pharmacy England briefing on the urgent supply of medicines and appliances strand of Pharmacy First has been published. The briefing provides detailed information on:

  • The consultation with the patient
  • Medicines liable to abuse
  • Different outcomes of the consultation
  • Controlled Drugs
  • Onward referral
  • Record keeping

Controlled Drugs

  • Medicines such as dihydrocodeine and codeine containing products (including co codamol) are Schedule 5 CDs.
  • Medicines such as benzodiazepines (apart from temazepam), zopiclone and zolpidem are Schedule 4 CDs.
  • Schedule 2 and 3 CDs cannot be supplied under ANY circumstances
  • Gabapentin and pregabalin are Schedule 3 CDs and therefore cannot be supplied under ANY circumstances
  • Schedule 4 and 5 CDs including phenobarbitone or phenobarbital sodium for the treatment of epilepsy are limited to five days supply only.
