Why Cholecalciferol is prescribed by brand

Update from ICB Medicine Optimisation Team

To ensure patient safety and regulatory compliance, we are providing the following guidance:
From October 2024, NHS HIOW does no longer recommend branded prescribing or branded generics for cost purposes, considering the different discounts that are applied to brands and branded generics (that may affect any potential savings)
Branded prescribing for specific formulations will still be recommended when there are clinical/safety reasons e.g., inhalers, insulin, supplements containing Vitamin D or Colecalciferol.
Recent cases of raised Vitamin D and calcium levels in children have been reported in Greater Manchester, highlighting the risk of severe health complications associated with overdosing on certain Vitamin D and Colecalciferol products, particularly those marketed as food supplements rather than licensed formulations.
The use of licensed products is preferred as it ensures adherence to the highest quality and safety standards.
Our list of recommended vitamins and minerals only include licensed formulations.
