Organised Drug-Facilitated Sexual Assault: Awareness for Healthcare Professionals

Recent media coverage has highlighted organised drug-facilitated sexual assault, a serious form of abuse in which individuals are subjected to non-consensual sexual acts while incapacitated through alcohol and/or drugs.

As awareness and reporting increase, NHS services may see more disclosures and presentations related to this form of sexual violence. Early recognition and trauma-informed support can play a vital role in improving outcomes for victims and helping to prevent further abuse.

We encourage healthcare professionals to raise awareness within their organisations, remain alert to potential signs and symptoms, and ensure appropriate support and safeguarding responses are in place.

Please also familiarise yourself with local Sexual Assault Referral Centres (SARCs). SARCs provide free, confidential support to anyone who has experienced rape or sexual assault at any point in their life. Services are available 24/7, and individuals can access support whether or not they choose to involve the police.
