New Products from AstraZeneca for COPD

AstraZeneca have launched two new products for COPD, both have been added to the local APC prescribing formulary

 

Bevespi Aerosphere and Trixeo Aerosphere

Bevespi Aerosphere

Bevespi is a treatment for COPD and contains glycopyrronium bromide and formoterol fumarate dihydrate.

Strength: glycopyrronium bromide 9 micrograms (equivalent to 7.2 micrograms of glycopyrronium), and 5 micrograms of formoterol fumarate dihydrate.

Each metered dose contains glycopyrronium bromide 10.4 micrograms (equivalent to 8.3 micrograms of glycopyrronium), and formoterol fumarate dihydrate 5.8 micrograms.

Studies have shown it improved lung function including predose FEV1 and peak FEV1 at 24 weeks vs placebo.

Dosage: 2 inhalations in the morning + 2 inhalations in the evening

Side effects: The most common adverse reactions with Bevespi Aerosphere were headache (1.9%), nausea (1.4%), muscle spasms (1.4%), and dizziness (1.3%). Other common adverse reactions included anxiety, dry mouth, and chest pain.

Trixeo Aerosphere

Trixeo is the associated triple therapy, for COPD patients inadequately treated with ICS/LABA or LABA/LAMA. It contains Budesonide 160 micrograms + Formoterol 5 micrograms  + Glycopyrronium 7.2 micrograms.

(Adding in Budesonide compared to the Bevespi Aerosphere but keeping the device the same).

Dosage: 2 inhalations in the morning + 2 inhalations in the evening

Additional side effects to those of Bevespi: Common adverse reactions include cough, UTIs and oral thrush.


For both products:

  • if a dose is missed, it should be taken as soon as possible, and the next dose should be taken at the usual time
  • a double dose should not be taken to make up for a forgotten dose
  • can be used with an Aerochamber Plus Flow-Vu spacer device
